It’s a Holiday Party on Broadway!!! December 2008
Local Long Beach merchants on Broadway stayed open late serving up live music, holiday beverages and tasty treats – along with amazing shopping deals.
Sasha wanted to be the best party on the block, so she hired us to play live music.
Wow, what an excellent idea. Live music will make any party the best.

I am in the rhythm section playing bass. Look you can see me? Listen for Winter Wonderland
First Mel Marco sings with us. Then I switch from playing bass to singing Smack Dab In The Middle with the Studio 8 choir.
“High Maintenance” is up next and its back to bass to end the show.

Take a look at the new strings. These Rotosound RS77LD Jazz Bass Strings were recommended by Greg at World of Stings. Thanks Greg.
Click on the pictures to get a better look.
The feel is better than the round wounds that I had before. There is more high-end (twang) in the Rotosound strings. I like to dip out the high end with the bass’s EQ though.

I just got my Fender Deluxe Jazz bass setup. There were some minor adjustments and I had some flatwound strings put on. I tell you more about it when I have some pictures to share.
Pictures make things a little more interesting.
Have a safe Halloween.

In case you are wondering why I have not been around, or why I have been hard to get a hold of, it’s because I have been preparing for the Scholarship Concert on Sunday October 14th. All the Long Beach City College groups performing in have been working hard. It smells like gym everywhere and its hard to find a practice room.

There will be performances by:
The Studio Singers, directed by Tom Dustman
Viking Chorale, directed by Skye Angulo
Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Marshall Fulbright
Wind Ensemble, conducted by Brian Hamilton
City Jazz Big Band, directed by Wayne Brashear
Starts at 2:00pm on 10-14-07 (Sunday)
Tickets are $10 each or $25 for a Family Ticket (admits up to 4)
All the proceeds of this concert go to music scholarships.
Located at the Long Beach City College Auditorium on the corner of Clark and Harvey Way

The Studio Singers Jazz Choir will be performing:
-What’ll I Do? by Irving Berlin
-Hallelujah I Love Her So by Ray Charles arranged by Alan Billingsley

-High Maintenance as recorded by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band
-Funky Cha-Cha By Arturo Sandoval, Arranged by Richard Eddy and Arturo

Controls include Volume, Mix, Treble, Bass, and Mid. The knobs all have a detent at zero. It helps me start from zero when I play through a different system/amp.
Studio clients enjoy tracking with my Jazz Bass. While recording, I like to use the treble knob to reduce fret noise at the instrument.
This means less EQ adjustments while mixing.

Some would say there are too many controls creating to many signal paths. I think convenience outweighs the slight change in signal. I enjoy being able to adjust the tone at the instrument. I can use an amp I know nothing about, flatten the amp’s EQ, adjust my tone at the bass and get the sound I want.
The controls have become a convenience while sharing an electric amp with an upright bass. The amp volume can be set up for the upright bass without worrying about changing it back for the electric.

This is my American Fender Jazz Bass.
It can get a good volume thanks to the active pickups. There are two.
One is closer to the neck and the other is closer to the bottom (bridge) where the balls of the strings are. The active pickups cancel hum and provide a clean loud sound. I believe the pickups have an oscillator. This oscillator requires power to cancel the hum.
I try to keep the battery in mind when I leave the instrument. Leaving a cable connected drains power from the 9 volt battery. I have developed a good habit of unplugging the cable when I am not playing.
Hum is not fun, but tone controls are.
I’ll tell you more about the tone controls later.
