Flatwounds on a Fender Jazz Bass
November 7, 2007 · No Comments
Take a look at the new strings. These Rotosound RS77LD Jazz Bass Strings were recommended by Greg at World of Stings. Thanks Greg.
Click on the pictures to get a better look.
The feel is better than the round wounds that I had before. There is more high-end (twang) in the Rotosound strings. I like to dip out the high end with the bass’s EQ though.

I just got my Fender Deluxe Jazz bass setup. There were some minor adjustments and I had some flatwound strings put on. I tell you more about it when I have some pictures to share.
Pictures make things a little more interesting.
Have a safe Halloween.

October 7, 2007 · 2 Comments
In case you are wondering why I have not been around, or why I have been hard to get a hold of, it’s because I have been preparing for the Scholarship Concert on Sunday October 14th. All the Long Beach City College groups performing in have been working hard. It smells like gym everywhere and its hard to find a practice room.

There will be performances by:
The Studio Singers, directed by Tom Dustman
Viking Chorale, directed by Skye Angulo
Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Marshall Fulbright
Wind Ensemble, conducted by Brian Hamilton
City Jazz Big Band, directed by Wayne Brashear
Starts at 2:00pm on 10-14-07 (Sunday)
Tickets are $10 each or $25 for a Family Ticket (admits up to 4)
All the proceeds of this concert go to music scholarships.
Located at the Long Beach City College Auditorium on the corner of Clark and Harvey Way

The Studio Singers Jazz Choir will be performing:
-What’ll I Do? by Irving Berlin
-Hallelujah I Love Her So by Ray Charles arranged by Alan Billingsley
-Love is here to Stay by George Gershwin and Ira arranged by Darmon Meader
-Sway by Norman Gimbel and Pablo Beltran Ruiz, arranged by Kirby Shaw
City Jazz Big Band will be performing:
-High Maintenance as recorded by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band
-Funky Cha-Cha By Arturo Sandoval, Arranged by Richard Eddy and Arturo
-Strike up the Band By George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin Arranged by Ralph Ford also a musical.

Don’t tell anyone I told you the song names, just tell them about the concert.
Suitable activity for all ages.
It’s a great date activity.
I wish pets were allowed.

The LBCC Jazz Choir is performing at the 2007 Scholarship concert. All proceeds help raise money for student scholarships.
Scholarship Concert
Sunday, October 14th, 2007.
Holiday Concerts
Friday, December 7th, 2007.
7:30pm
Long Beach City College Auditorium

You can find me in the Tenor section (on the right in the picture above.) There are four tenors this semester. We are out numbered by the other sections which forces us to sing a little louder sometimes.
We have been working on a Spanish and English version of “Sway” by Norman Gimbel and Pablo Beltran Ruiz, arranged by Kirby Shaw. Kirby Shaw has brought us cool arrangements in the past. There is some nice dissonance in the last chord (Dm69).
Click here if you want to see some pictures from the last tour. Caution, some pictures may get a little silly.

Night Big Band Music
September 3, 2007 · 2 Comments
The LBCC Night Big Band is playing two songs from this album.

-Cool School Dropout By Les Hooper Band on the CD “Out of the Woods”
-Miles Back By Les Hooper Band on the CD “Out of the Woods”.
The bass parts are unpredictable at first. It took time for the song Miles Back to grow on me. Miles Back is a fun bass chart to read.
Does this cover make you think of Mortal Combat the video game?
